Dating Disaster - Oh That Awkward Silence

I remember back when I was in my 20’s, my brother had this gorgeous friend. He was absolutely easy on the eyes and even drove one of those flashy red sports cars. He reminded me of House Md a little bit. My brother tried setting us up on a date. For some reason, that never panned out.

About a year later, my brother’s friend started to come to all the birthday parties and such and we finally set a date. I was delighted because I really liked this guy and he seemed to be into me as well.

We decided to go to the movies and maybe get a coffee afterwards. The movies went fine because, well, you are watching a movie. There wasn’t any snuggling or the hand accidently brushing up against you which is typical on a movie date. We just sat there and stared ahead. I didn’t think much about it, however, I was a little bit disappointed.

Next came the coffee. We sat down in the booth and ordered a coffee. Now, this is where conversation usually happens. Not a word. It was so awkward. I would ask him a question here and there to try to spark up something, but he would come back with a simple answer followed by the dreaded silence again. We left and he brought me home.

I chalked that up as a bad “first date” and gave him a call a couple days later. Again, the dreaded awkwardness. We both decided that it just wasn’t going to work out. I mean, you have to be able to talk to each other to get anywhere in a relationship, right? What’s funny though, is during the next couple years to follow, we both still wanted to be together but ended up dating other people.
