Black Women & Asian Men Revealed

When it comes to interracial dating, what pairings do you automatically think of? Most would say black men & white women or white men and Asian women. If black women or Asian men are in the equation, it’s usually in consideration of a white partner– not one another.

Yet, things are changing, especially as movies like Romeo Must Die and Akira’s Hip Hop Shop take center stage. People are starting to notice these couplings. Some are even considering the possibilities for themselves, but there are reservations among both communities.

For African American women, the thought of dating an Asian man might make some view her as a race traitor. She may also have fears that an Asian man is not genuinely interested in her, due to the conflicts that exists between Blacks and Asians in general.

For Asian men, the thought of dating African American women might mean rejection from his family, especially if they view Blacks as being poor or uneducated.

And both parties may fear rejection from their communities, who may either laugh at their romance or look at them in disgust.

Take for example my friend, as an African American woman with an Asian man which started off on the internet email marketing themselves and then turning into a treasured love affair. My friend can honestly say that she hasn’t dealt with too many problems because of her relationship. True, they have encountered a few ignorant people who stare at them like they are diseased or make jokes about them when their heads are turned. But in general, their relationship is like any other, both at home and in public. In fact, most of the people who know them don’t even think about their racial differences anymore.

Of course, this isn’t to say that other people will have positive experiences, especially when it comes to familial relations. Often, there is some rejection that occurs, though this is not the case with every situation.

Regardless, no relationship is free from problems, even if both parties are of the same race. This is not to say that African American women and Asian men should avoid the concerns behind interracial dating, but they shouldn’t use them as an excuse not to do it either.
